The following statements are drawn from the law establishing the University and from its Academic Brief. They govern programme approval, academic appointments and institutional review.

To be a topnotch centre of medical excellence that seeks to enhance the wellbeing and health of people and societies through advanced medical education, research and services.

To train and empower excellent medical personnel who shall significantly contribute to the provision of world-class medical services to people and societies, as well as sustain innovative and responsive medical training and research.

The objectives of the University

These objectives are set out in the law establishing the University and are reviewed by Senate each session.

01Universal access to learningTo encourage the advancement of learning and to hold out to all persons, without distinction of race, creed, sex or political conviction, the opportunity of acquiring a higher and liberal education.
02Medical education excellenceTo provide sources of instruction and other facilities for the pursuit of learning, and to make those facilities available on proper terms.
03Outcome-based curriculaTo develop and implement outcome-based curricula that are empirically effective and globally competitive.
04Leading-edge programmesTo provide leading-edge academic programmes and degrees that meet the health professional and healthcare needs of contemporary Nigeria.
