Governance and management of the University.

Authority within the University is divided by law. The Governing Council exercises general control over policy, finance and property; the Senate is responsible for academic matters; and the Vice-Chancellor is the principal academic and administrative officer.

The principal academic and administrative officer of the University, responsible for strategic leadership, institutional development and the day-to-day management of both campuses. The Vice-Chancellor chairs the Senate and reports to the Governing Council.

Governance structure

Authority, from the Visitor down

Visitor
The President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. Appoints the Chancellor, Pro-Chancellor and Governing Council, confirms the Vice-Chancellor, and conducts a visitation at least once every five years.
Chancellor
Head of the University and its ambassador. Takes precedence before all other members and presides at Convocation when conferring degrees.
Pro-Chancellor
Chairman of the Governing Council, appointed by the President for a term of four years.
Governing Council
General control of policy, finances, property and public relations. Ensures accounts are audited annually and an annual report published. Four-year tenure. Membership: the Pro-Chancellor as chairman, the Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellors, one person from the Federal Ministry of Education, four appointed by the National Council of Ministers, four appointed by Senate, two by Congregation and one by Convocation.
Senate
Chaired by the Vice-Chancellor. Responsible for academic matters: programmes, examinations, admissions standards and the academic calendar.

Statutory bodies of staff and of graduates respectively, each with representation on the Governing Council.
Faculties & Departments
Deans and Heads of Department carry academic delivery, supported by teaching and research units.
